How old were Lucy and Daisy when they first came to camp?
Lucy was three months old--I used to be able to hold her in the palm of my hand. She went right from puppy class to day camp, so her whole life she's been here. Daisy was the same age, about four months old. We got them two years apart.
And they are the same breed, right?
Yes, both Maltese. We actually let Lucy choose Daisy! We took her to different breeders and we said: you decide. And she did! It was very funny because there were puppies we were attracted to who Lucy would have nothing to do with--she went right to Daisy and nudged her, licked her a little bit.
That is so sweet! What other silly or sweet things that they've done stand out to you?
Well--we have a photograph of this--Lucy has her leash on and Daisy has it in her mouth and is just pulling her along, yanking at her leash. Very cute. As you know they are very different personalities.
That is their personalities in a picture! What would you say is your favorite thing about day camp?
Well a couple things. From their perspective, its great because they get to socialize. They really miss their friends. One time, oh maybe ten years ago, we went down to Florida. We drove all the way down there with both of them. After about a week, I called Beth and said, I have no idea whats going on, they both won't do anything, they're just sitting and staring at the wall. She said, 'they miss their friends!' and its true. They miss their friends.
They also like the physical activity. Back years ago, Day Camp was closed for a week at Christmas; it wasn't open every day like it is now. Days it wasn't open they would miss it; in the morning they would go stand by the car ready to go to day camp!
And from a personal point of view I like this day care for a couple reasons, one being that it is really well run. You don't worry when you drop your dog off and you know your dog is going to be there when you get back. And its not just that
you are all so conscientious, but that you all really care about them. It makes a big difference.
Well this is not so long ago, it struck me as so funny, they had both come back from their walk and because it was wet outside and the grass had been cut recently they were green, they looked like Saint Patricks day! Neon green.
I love how Daisy marches in here each morning. I run this place!
She’s like that at home too. She takes her protection of the house very very seriously! If anyone comes in, lots of barking. Until you pet her of course.
And Lucy, I think what's characteristic of Lucy is that she always makes people feel better. Someone came over our house a month ago, having a very hard day. They came in and no one said anything, it was clear they needed their space. But Lucy just picked up a throw rug and brought it over to them.
They are so different, but they watch out for one another. When I walk them Lucy is very aware of protecting Daisy and Daisy is of course barking away. They have that going for them.
