The Gross Truth about your Dog's Food Bowl

The Gross Truth about your Dog's Food Bowl

by Beth Ostrowski-Parks, CBCC-KA, CPDT-KA

We spend so much time choosing high-quality food, healthy treats, and supplements for our dogs… and then we serve it in a bowl that hasn’t been washed in days, sometimes even weeks!  I’m not here to shame anyone — this is one of the most common oversights, and early on, even I was guilty of this.  Only time taught me how important this is.  Your dog’s food bowl can quickly become a bacterial playground.

Dog Bowls Get Really Dirty — Really Fast

After just one meal, your dog’s bowl can be coated with:

           Saliva
•           Food residue
•           Oils and fats from kibble or raw food
•           Slobber (so much slobber)

That combo creates a biofilm — a sticky layer where bacteria thrive. Studies have found dog bowls can harbor bacteria like:

•           Salmonella
•           E. coli
•           Listeria
•           Mold and yeast

And here’s the kicker: dogs may handle bacteria better than we do, but they’re not immune — especially puppies, seniors, or dogs with health issues.

What Can Happen If Bowls Stay Dirty?

A constantly dirty food or water bowl can contribute to:

•           Upset stomach or diarrhea
•           Vomiting
•           Gas and digestive issues
•           Skin or chin acne (especially in short-haired breeds)
•           Increased exposure to foodborne illness
•           Cross-contamination to your hands and kitchen surfaces

You could be doing everything right nutritionally, but the bowl itself is undoing some of that good work.

Water Bowls Count Too

Water bowls grow bacteria even faster than food bowls because:

•           They stay moist all day
•           Dogs backwash food and saliva into the bowls
•           Dust, hair, and debris fall in

That slimy feeling on the sides? That’s biofilm. Time for a scrub.

This is a Big one:  Don’t forget the Food Storage Container

That big bin of kibble in the pantry? It needs cleaning too.

Over time, food storage containers collect:

•           Oil residue from kibble
•           Crumbs and dust
•           Moisture
•           Mold spores
•           Bacteria from scoops and hands

When you just pour a new bag on top of the old residue, you’re basically “seasoning” fresh food with old bacteria and rancid fats. That can affect:

•           Food freshness
•           Nutrient quality
•           Smell and taste
•           Your dog’s digestion

I thoroughly wash the containers I use every time I empty them.  Tedious?  Yes.  Important to my dogs’ health?  Very Important!

How Often Should You Wash bowls and food containers?

Food bowl:

Ideally after every meal (like your own dishes)

Water bowl:

Daily minimum — more if it looks slimy or dirty

Food storage container:

Wash, dry completely, then refill with a new bag

(Not just topping it off!)

How to Clean Properly

•           Use hot, soapy water
•           Scrub all surfaces (especially corners and rims)
•           Rinse well
•           Let fully air dry
•           Use Stainless steel bowls.  They are easiest to sanitize.
•           Dishwasher = great option if the bowl is dishwasher-safe

This Is a Health Habit, Not Just a Cleanliness Thing

You wouldn’t eat off the same unwashed plate for days — and your dog shouldn’t either.

Clean bowls support:

•           Better digestion
•           Reduced illness risk
•           Healthier skin
•           Overall immune health

It’s one of the simplest ways to level up your dog’s care — no fancy products required.
