Brushing your dog’s teeth is an important step in keeping him happy and healthy. Just like humans, dogs get tartar build up on their teeth. If your dog never gets his teeth cleaned, years of build up can cause gum disease, bacterial infection, and teeth needing to be pulled.
If you can, brush your dog’s teeth daily. If time doesn’t allow for that, try to do it at least once a week. Make sure to get toothpaste made specifically for dogs. It comes in flavors like chicken to make it more appealing. You can buy a toothbrush made specifically for dogs, or use a normal one, just make sure it has soft bristles.
Like anything new you introduce to your dog, you want it to be a positive experience. Start by putting peanut butter on your finger and running it along your dog’s teeth. This will help him associate your fingers in his mouth with something positive.
After a couple days of peanut butter, introduce toothpaste, rubbing it on your dog’s teeth with your finger. Give lots of praise and give treats before and after. After a couple of days of that, introduce the toothbrush, making sure to brush gently. Always give lots of praise, and treats before and after to keep it fun and positive for your dog.
