Some breeds of dog such as shepherds, huskies, chows, pomeranians, and many more, have an undercoat, which is a secondary layer of fur under their primary coat. The undercoat is generally a lighter color than the primary coat, and is a softer and fuzzier fur. It works as your dogs own personal climate control, keeping them warm in cold weather, and cool in warm weather.
Dogs with undercoats are constantly shedding fur, and if the loose fur isn’t brushed out regularly it will start to get packed in under the primary coat. This packing of the loose coat can create a blanket of fur trapped in your dogs coat, which can affect their skin and coat health, cause hotspots, and won’t allow the undercoat to keep your dog comfortable in cold or hot weather. Dogs with undercoats require brushing at least once a week, especially during the shedding seasons, which is mostly in Spring and Fall, but continues throughout the summer.
At It’s PAWSible! we have an awesome tool for brushing out undercoat called a Rake N Vac. It’s a shedding tool that hooks up to the vacuum system in our grooming van, so during brushing the coat is also being sucked up, removing a lot of fur and also removing lots of dander from your dogs coat. We are even always amazed when we empty the vacuum. We always use this tool on any dog with an undercoat that comes in for a full groom, but we can also give you’re dog a brush out in between grooming at your request.
This is just one service that is available to you as one of our daycamp clients!
